Crestron: flagship of Hi-End automation
Complete building automation on one platform: light, climate, shading, AV, security. For residences from 500 m² and commercial facilities
Crestron — the flagship of Hi-End automation
Crestron is an American company founded in 1972. The leader in Hi-End automation of residential and commercial properties. When they say a Crestron smart home, they mean unified control of everything: lighting, climate, blinds, audio, video, security.
Unlike KNX (wired bus) and Lutron (lighting + blinds), Crestron is a central controller that manages everything. Lighting, blinds, projector, TV, climate, audio multiroom, intercom — all through one system.
When Crestron is chosen
Residences from 500 m² with a large amount of AV equipment. Home cinema, multiroom on 10+ zones, climate control on several floors, complex scenarios.
Commercial objects: meeting rooms, conference halls, museums, hotels, restaurants. Where centralized control of AV, lighting and blinds is needed.
Turnkey projects with full integration: no single brand covers everything on its own. Crestron is the glue that unites everything into one interface.
Crestron architecture
Controller is the brain of the system. CP3, CP4, AV3, Mc3 series — different in performance and functionality. CP4 is the main one for residences. Supports Ethernet, Cresnet, RS-232, IR, relays, analog and digital inputs.
Touch panels — TSW series (5, 7, 10 inches). Touch screens on the wall to control the whole house. There are also portable remotes HR-310, mobile apps Crestron Go.
Programming in Crestron Studio or SIMPL+ (for old projects). This is serious development, requires a certified programmer.
What Crestron can do
Lighting and blinds — via DALI, KNX gateway, Lutron gateway, direct control via DMX or 0-10V. DMX dimming for LED strips and RGB lighting.
AV equipment — DM-NVX matrices (4K over IP), amplifiers, projectors, screens. Control via IR, RS-232, IP. Full integration with Apple TV, Sonos, Blu-ray.
Audio multiroom — Sonos, NUVO, Crestron Sonnex. Up to 16-32 zones. Volume control, source selection, synchronization.
Climate — thermostats, radiators, underfloor heating, air conditioners, ventilation. Complex logic: day/night modes, vacation, party.
Cost and payback
Crestron is the most expensive automation option. CP4 controller — from $5000, touch panel — from $1500, programming — a separate item (from $20-50k for a complex project).
It pays off where living without a single management system is impossible: homes with home cinema, multiroom, complex climate. If you just need to control lighting — KNX is cheaper.
Certified Crestron programmer — Master Programmer. There are few of them, and they are expensive. This limits the availability of Crestron in the regions.
