KNX vs Lutron vs Crestron: what to choose

All three platforms are the leaders of Hi-End automation. But each has its own strengths, its own niche. The wrong choice is either overpaying for unnecessary functionality, or the absence of a needed function.

Type: open wired standard (EN 50090 / ISO/IEC 14543).

Manufacturers: 500+ (ABB, Schneider, Hager, Gira, Jung, Berker, MDT, Theben).

Strengths: open standard, vendor independence, wide range of equipment, good support in Russia, moderate price.

Weaknesses: LED dimming is not always ideal (depends on the dimmer and LED), you need to run a bus to all points, requires a qualified programmer.

For whom: houses and apartments from 100 to 500 m², offices, hotels. De facto standard for the Hi-End segment in Europe.

Budget: from 1500-3000 ₽ per m² (equipment + work) for mid-level systems.

Type: proprietary platform (HomeWorks QSX, RA3, myRoom).

Manufacturer: one — Lutron Electronics (USA).

Strengths: flawless LED dimming (signature feature), best-in-industry blinds (Sivoia QS), designer panels (Palladiom, Alisse), retrofit support via RF (RA3).

Weaknesses: binding to one vendor, equipment is more expensive than KNX, requires a certified Lutron engineer, fewer specialists in Russia.

For whom: Hi-End residences with a focus on light and blinds, designer projects, retrofit without chasing walls.

Budget: from 3000-5000 ₽ per m² (Lutron equipment + work only).

Type: proprietary platform with a central controller.

Manufacturer: one — Crestron Electronics (USA).

Strengths: all-in-one (light, climate, blinds, AV, security through one system), best AV integration (DM-NVX, touch panels, remotes), scalability (from apartment to stadium), reliability.

Weaknesses: the most expensive option, requires a certified Crestron programmer (there are few), the complexity of the system requires serious maintenance.

For whom: Hi-End residences from 500 m² with a large amount of AV, commercial objects (meeting rooms, conference halls, museums), objects that need a single system.

Budget: from 5000-10000 ₽ per m² (equipment only without programming). Programming is a separate expense item.

In practice, a combination is often used: KNX for climate and socket groups, Lutron for light and blinds, Crestron as a central control system and integration with AV.

This approach is more expensive, but gives the best quality in each area. KNX covers what Lutron and Crestron do worse (distributed logic, wide selection of sensors). Lutron covers dimming and blinds. Crestron covers integration and AV.

Up to 200 m² apartment, moderate budget — KNX.

200-500 m² house with emphasis on light — KNX + Lutron RA3 (radio for blinds).

500+ m² residence — KNX + Lutron QSX + Crestron as the central system.

Commercial object (meeting rooms) — Crestron.

Hi-End cinema — Crestron or Control4 + a separate stack for acoustics (StormAudio, Trinnov).
